I.The Organ and Organists of
Saint-Sulpice
featuring Daniel Roth at the Grand Organ of
Saint-Sulpice, Volumes I & II (1998)
This two volume set features Daniel Roth at the console of the great organ of Saint-Sulpice.
Daniel Roth demonstrates the organ and talks about the great organists of the 19th
and 20th century French organ school, especially Widor and Dupré. Also featured
is M. Roth at the Saint-Sulpice console playing the first movement of Widor’s Symphony
V, Franck’s Choral in A Minor, Dupré’s Te Deum, and Roth’s Tryptique. A demonstration
of the different stops of the organ and the mechanics of the console by the master
of this great instrument gives the viewer as much of a hands-on experience as is
possible without actually sitting at the console. This two volume set was filmed
in April, 1998, and is over three hours long. The sound quality is serviceable, recorded
in the organ loft. $32.00 for the Two-Volume DVD set.
$28.00 for the edited version of 2 hours and 30 minutes now on one DVD.
II. Schweitzer, Widor, and the Musical and Artistic History of Saint-Sulpice
featuring Daniel Roth at the organs of Saint-Sulpice, Volume III (2001)
This single DVD offers almost two hours of high quality sound and video featuring
Daniel Roth walking through the church as he explains the history of music and art
at Saint-Sulpice, beginning before the Revolution and continuing through the time
of Schweitzer. Both the great and choir organs are featured, with Roth performing
over 45 minutes of music on both organs, including Franck’s Priére, Widor’s Movement
I from Symphonie VI, Widor’s transcription of Bach, Saint-Saëns’ Scherzo, Opus 8,
No. 5, and a beautiful improvisation combining Victimae paschali laudes and Herzlich
tut mich verlangen. The performances at the great organ are filmed there, but recorded
from below, using the highest quality recording equipment. The camera work is stunning,
covering every inch of the beautiful interior. $22.00
Shipping charges: 1 video: $6; add $3 for each additional video.
